Why internal linking matters for AEO

AI models use internal linking patterns as a signal of topic authority. When many pages on a site link to a central page on a topic, the central page is recognized as authoritative on that topic and is cited more readily.

The mechanism is similar to PageRank for traditional search but extended for AI citation logic. Pages well-supported by internal links earn citations on topic queries. Pages weakly supported earn citations only on long-tail queries where competition is thin.

Descriptive anchor text

The single most leveraged internal linking choice is anchor text. The anchor text on a link is the strongest signal AI models use to understand what the target page is about.

Compare three ways to link to the same target page:

The descriptive version transmits the strongest signal. The branded version is moderate. The generic version transmits almost no signal and contributes little to the target's topic authority.

The rule is to use descriptive anchor text that matches what the target page is about. Avoid "click here," "learn more," "read this," and other generic anchors.

Hub-and-spoke structure

A coherent topic cluster has a hub page (the comprehensive guide to the topic) and spoke pages (specific subtopics or applications). Internal linking should reinforce this structure.

Each spoke page should link to the hub page. The hub page should link to every spoke. Spokes can link to other spokes when content connects.

The fix is discipline in writing: rewrite generic anchors to be descriptive of the target. "Click here for our pricing" becomes "see [our pricing tiers]." "Learn more about AEO" becomes "explore [what Answer Engine Optimization is]."

The rewrite preserves the reader's intent (knowing the link goes to pricing or to AEO basics) while transmitting the topic signal to AI extraction. Both audiences are served.

For a 1,500-word article, three to six internal links is the right range. The links should be distributed naturally through the article, not bunched in a closing "related reads" list (though such lists are also useful in addition).

The links should serve the reader. A link inserted purely for SEO without serving the reader's flow reads as a link-spam pattern and provides less AEO value than a link inserted at a natural elaboration point.

What about the orphan page problem

An orphan page is a page on the site that no other page links to. Orphan pages can still be discovered by crawlers (through sitemaps) but rarely earn citations because they have no internal authority signal.

Many brands have substantial orphan inventory: blog posts published years ago, landing pages from old campaigns, knowledge base articles created for support but never integrated into the broader site.
