What is an llms.txt file?
llms.txt is an open standard proposed by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) in September 2024. It is a single Markdown file served at the root of a website (https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that gives large language models a curated, machine-readable index of the site: who you are, what you do, and which pages matter. AI crawlers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Perplexity, and others can use it to understand and cite a brand more accurately.
How is llms.txt different from robots.txt or sitemap.xml?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they may and may not access. sitemap.xml lists every URL on the site. llms.txt is different: it is a curated, human-written summary in Markdown that highlights the most important pages with one-line descriptions, optimised for LLM consumption rather than search engine indexing. All three can coexist on the same site.
