How to Fix What ChatGPT and AI Assistants Get Wrong About Your Brand

Why ChatGPT, Claude and other AI assistants get your brand wrong, how to trace each error to the page behind it, fix it there and get the correction recrawled.

Why does ChatGPT give wrong information about my brand?

An AI assistant answers from what its model learned in training, from pages it pulls in during a live search, or from both. Either source can be stale or wrong, and when both run thin, the model can guess.

Model memory and the training cutoff

Anthropic lists June 2026 as the training cutoff for Claude Sonnet 5.5, and says its models may not know about events after their cutoff dates. If you rebranded or were acquired after that date, the model won't know until it searches.

OpenAI says its models learn from public web content, partner data and data from users, trainers and researchers, and keep no copy of that data, so there is no stored record to edit.

Live search and the pages it retrieves

ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can all search the web while answering (see the crawler table below). An old pricing page in the results becomes an old price in the answer.

OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page says it plainly: "Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect". Anthropic says the quality of Claude's answers depends on the sources it references.

Plausible guesses

OpenAI's research calls such guesses hallucinations, plausible but false statements that persist partly because evaluations reward guessing over admitting uncertainty.

An October 2025 study by the EBU and the BBC had journalists evaluate more than 3,000 answers from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity. It found 45% had at least one significant issue and 20% had major accuracy issues, including outdated information. The questions were about news, so take it as a signal and nothing more.

Why does the answer about my brand change every time I ask?

The models have some built-in randomness, and the pages they pull in shift between searches. OpenAI says the same question may yield different answers across different queries.

Turning the randomness down doesn't stop it. A study of LLMs set to be deterministic found accuracy varied by up to 15% across repeated runs of the same tasks, and none gave repeatable accuracy across all tasks.

Google's AI features documentation adds that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links vary. So a single correct screenshot doesn't tell you a fix worked.

How do I find and log wrong answers across AI assistants?

Ask a fixed set of buyer questions to each assistant and log every claim against your list of correct facts. Every later step in this guide works from that log.

  1. Write the question set. Questions about your brand by name (what you sell, pricing, ownership, markets) plus category questions where you should appear. OnlyAEO researches each buyer persona from the brand's market, because each persona gets a different answer.
  2. Cover the assistants buyers use. At minimum ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews.
  3. Repeat every question. On different days, in fresh chats.
  4. Log the same fields. Date, assistant, question, whether it searched, cited URLs, the wrong claim verbatim and the correct fact.
  5. Rank by harm. Wrong pricing or compliance claims before a stale founding date.

To automate the re-runs, see our guide to AI citation monitoring alerts.

Where does each wrong fact come from?

Start with what the assistant cited, because the wrong sentence usually sits on a cited page. Perplexity's help center says each answer carries numbered citations, and Anthropic says every Claude response that uses search includes citations.

  • Your own pages: Old pricing pages, archived product pages, press releases and blog posts that still resolve. Search the wrong phrase in quotes on your domain.
  • Third-party pages: Directories, review sites, comparison articles and old press coverage.
  • Google's knowledge panel: Google says panel information is generated automatically from public information on the web, so a wrong panel points back to a wrong source elsewhere.
  • Wikipedia and Wikidata: The article, its talk page and your company's Wikidata item.
  • Model memory: Suspect it when there's no citation and the claim survives fresh searches and repeated runs.

If the assistant is mixing you up with a company of the same name, read how AI engines handle a brand that shares a name with another company.

How do I fix wrong facts on my own website?

Publish a current page that states the contested facts plainly, describe your organization in structured data, and deal with every older page that says something different. Do this before you ask anyone else to correct anything.

  • A clear fact page: Legal name, what you sell and to whom, ownership, locations and the date the facts were last checked. See how AI engines read your about page.
  • Facts in visible text: Microsoft warns that AI systems may not render content hidden in tabs or expandable menus. Keep core facts out of accordions.
  • Organization structured data: Google's Organization documentation says home page markup can help it understand your organization's administrative details and disambiguate it, and sameAs points to pages on other sites about you.
  • sameAs targets: schema.org gives a Wikipedia page, a Wikidata entry or an official website as examples. List only profiles that match your fact page.
  • Old pages: Update a page that still has a job; permanently redirect a retired page to its current equivalent (our test below shows why).

How do I correct third-party sites, Google and Wikipedia?

Each outside source has its own correction route, and most reviewers compare your request with other public pages.

Directories, review sites and press

Ask the publisher or listing owner for a correction, link the fact page and log the request with its date.

Google knowledge panel and Business Profile

Google checks suggested panel edits against other public information. That's why the outside sources come first.

Google's business details guide says a verified official representative can update the panel to override what Google finds automatically. A verified Business Profile owner can edit the address, contact information, business type and photos.

Wikipedia and Wikidata

Wikipedia's conflict of interest rules cover edits about your employer or clients, and strongly discourage direct edits to those articles; you propose changes on the talk page instead.

Its plain-language COI guide says to fix a mistake with an edit COI request on the talk page, and its edit request guide asks for reliable sources for added material. Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline says a verifiable and appropriate proposal will usually be accepted.

Wikidata accepts an item for a clearly identifiable entity backed by serious, publicly available references. More in what AI engines do with your Wikipedia entry.

Which AI crawlers need access to the corrected page?

Each assistant's search crawler has to be allowed to fetch the page, because that crawler feeds live answers. OpenAI says its search and training crawlers are set independently, so you can allow one and block the other.

Google AI Overviews and AI ModeGoogle's search indexGoogle's search crawlerRequest a recrawl and update the sitemap (next section)

A stray disallow line can block every row above; our robots.txt guide lists the common mistakes.

How do I get the corrected page recrawled faster?

Use the sitemap, Google's recrawl request and IndexNow to tell search engines the page changed. You still don't get to set the timing.

  1. Update the sitemap lastmod. Google's sitemap guide generally counts changes to main content, structured data or links as significant, and a copyright date change as not significant. Change the date only when facts changed.
  2. Ask Google to recrawl. Google says crawling after a request can take a few days to a few weeks, and a request does not guarantee inclusion quickly or at all. Repeat requests for the same URL won't speed it up.
  3. Submit to IndexNow. IndexNow's FAQ says a URL sent to a single endpoint is shared with all IndexNow-enabled search engines, the route to Bing's index and so to Copilot. IndexNow's home page adds that without it, engines can take days to weeks to notice a change.
  4. Don't over-read the response. IndexNow's documentation says an HTTP 200 response only confirms receipt, and the FAQ adds that submission does not guarantee immediate indexing.

Do feedback buttons and reports fix wrong AI answers?

Feedback buttons and reports flag a response to the provider, while the model and the pages it reads stay as they were. File them anyway, then fix the source.

  • Thumbs down in Claude: Anthropic says the button tells it a particular response was unhelpful.
  • OpenAI's report form: OpenAI says its Model Quality team may review reported domains and content and apply filters so ChatGPT relies less on unreliable sources; the form covers content that may break OpenAI's terms or the law.
  • Google AI Overviews: Google's help page says AI Overviews can and will make mistakes.
  • Defamation or safety claims: Keep the log entries as evidence and talk to counsel. This article is not legal advice.

How we tested this

On 15 October 2026, before writing, we asked ChatGPT and Claude this article's question, as we do for every article, and read every page they cited in full. We also asked them about ourselves: what OnlyAEO is, what it offers and which AI assistants it covers.

  • ChatGPT read our current site. It searched, cited our homepage and how-it-works page, and listed the AI assistants we work on exactly as our company facts state them.
  • Claude read our old site. It cited onlyaeo.com blog posts we had removed in a cleanup earlier that month (they now redirect) and repeated outdated claims from them. It also called our list of engines inconsistent, because those old posts named different assistants.
  • ChatGPT skipped search on the how-to question. It answered from memory with no citations, while Claude ran a single search and cited only vendor blogs.

What we take from it: a removed page keeps feeding answers through search indexes until the engines recrawl it. A redirect sends that recrawl to the current page; deletion alone does not.

The engine-list finding shows what an assistant does when your pages disagree: it reports the contradiction (hence the old-pages step above). Limit: a single run per question.

What can't you control, and how do you know the fix worked?

Beyond the limits above (model memory, crawl timing), you can't buy placement; you can measure whether answers changed. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed and results are ranked on multiple factors.

  1. Re-run the logged questions. Same wording, same assistants.
  2. Repeat each run, as in the log. OnlyAEO's platform runs each prompt more than once per engine on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Grok.
  3. Check the citations. The fix has landed when the corrected page is cited and the old URL is gone.
  4. Separate recommendation from mention. OnlyAEO counts answers where AI recommends a brand separately from answers that only mention it or link to it as a source. A corrected fact without the recommendation still needs work.
  5. Give memory-only errors longer. They can outlast every page fix until a newer model ships.

For the full method, see how to measure your AI visibility.

Should you fix this in-house or have a team do it for you?

The choice depends on how far the errors spread and who owns the monthly re-check.

  • In-house fits when: Your web team can edit the fact page and robots.txt quickly, and marketing keeps the log running.
  • Handing it to a team fits when: The error spreads across directories, press and most assistants, or legal needs a record of who changed what.

OnlyAEO is an AEO platform that tracks where AI names your brand and creates the content to change it. We work on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI (Muse) and Instinct.

Our team can also run it for you; a managed plan covers monthly AI visibility analytics, fact-checked articles on your site in your voice, a website health check so every AI engine can read the site and, on the Authority plan, help getting mentioned on the sites and listings AI reads.

More questions about fixing wrong AI answers about your brand

Does blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot remove old facts from the models?

No. Anthropic says restricting ClaudeBot signals that a site's future materials should be left out of training. It does nothing about what a model has already learned.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special schema for Google's AI answers to use a correction?

Google says no. Its AI features documentation states that you need no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Can we pay someone to edit our Wikipedia article?

Only with disclosure: Wikipedia says anyone editing for pay must disclose who pays them and who the client is, a Wikimedia Foundation requirement. Its COI request guide also says not to use AI chatbots to write any part of the request.

What can a customer do if ChatGPT gives them a wrong answer about us?

OpenAI's help center tells users who see a wrong result to ask ChatGPT to search again using a specific source, date or location. Your fact page URL is the source to name.
