What is an AEO platform?
An AEO platform is software that measures how AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answer your buyers' questions, shows where your brand is named or missing and which sources those answers cite, and helps you change what they say.
AEO stands for answer engine optimization, the practice of getting your brand into AI-generated answers; our guide to answer engine optimization covers the discipline itself. You will also see GEO, "AI visibility software" and "AI search optimization platform" used for the same category.
HubSpot uses a similar definition and adds sentiment and competitor tracking across answer engines to the list.
Why it is a separate category from SEO tools
SEO tools assume a stable list of ranked links and a click you can count. AI answers hold to neither: each one is written fresh, it changes from run to run, and the reader often never clicks at all.
Pew Research Center, using March 2025 browsing data from U.S. adults, found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked an ordinary search result on 8% of visits, while those who saw none did so on 15%. In the same 2025 study, people clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in just 1% of visits to pages with such a summary.
ChatGPT does not always look anything up. Graphite found that 58% of ChatGPT responses to entity-comparison prompts used web search in early August 2026. Otherwise a model answers from parametric knowledge learned in pre-training, and Graphite explains that it uses a search tool to fetch fresh references only some of the time.
How does an AEO platform work?
An AEO platform puts a fixed set of buyer questions to each AI engine again and again, stores every answer, and turns the answers into counts you can act on. The steps below describe the category in general.
Asking the questions
- Build a prompt set from real buyer questions. Write prompts per persona, in a buyer's own words. Google's John Mueller wrote in May 2025 that people using Google's AI search ask longer, more specific questions plus follow-ups.
- Run each prompt many times on each engine. In SparkToro's January 2026 study, ChatGPT or Google's AI, asked the same question 100 times, rarely gave the same list of brands in any two responses. Matching order is rarer still: SparkToro puts it closer to 1 in 1,000 runs before two lists share an order. SparkToro says a stable picture usually takes at least 60 to 100 runs of a question, averaged.
- Keep every answer word for word. Ahrefs noted in August 2025 that the same query can return wholly different citations, depending on things like conversation history. So each run is stored with its engine, date and exact prompt.
Reading the answers
- Separate mentions, recommendations and citations. A mention names your brand without a link and a citation is a clickable source back to your site, the split HubSpot uses. A recommendation tells the buyer to consider you. Graphite cites Similarweb data that 7% of US ChatGPT responses include citations, so counting links alone misses most answers.
- Map the sources AI leans on. The HOTH, using Ahrefs Brand Radar data for a small set of brands on ChatGPT in the US in August 2026, found 69.6% of citing responses pointed to the brand's own site on questions naming it, but 1.3% on questions with "best". Ahrefs found in December 2025 that, on top-of-funnel prompts, "best X" blog lists were 43.8% of page types ChatGPT cited.
- Compare cited sources with search rankings. Ahrefs' August 2025 study of 15,000 prompts found that, on average, only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot sit in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Lilach Bullock found in October 2026 that 64.5% of pages cited in AI Overviews on software searches came from sites outside the top 10 for the same search.
Acting and measuring
- Read AI crawler data. Logs show which bots read which pages. OpenAI lets sites control GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) separately in robots.txt, while ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a person asks. Google crawls for Search and its AI features with Googlebot, and Google-Extended limits AI training in some other Google systems. Anthropic documents ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User on its crawler page.
- Create and fix content. Platforms that go past tracking draft answer-first pages for lost questions and flag pages engines cannot read. HubSpot notes a visibility tool cannot make up for pages that search or retrieval systems cannot access.
- Measure share across runs, not rank. SparkToro concluded that visibility percentage across many prompts and runs is a reasonable metric, while position in an answer is not.
- Record whether the engine searched. Graphite recommends letting the model decide and reporting each prompt's grounding rate, the share of runs where it searches on its own. For prompts that never trigger search naturally, forcing ChatGPT to search shifted brand visibility by 20 points on average, Graphite found.
What capabilities should an AEO platform have?
A useful AEO platform covers the whole loop: which questions to ask, what the engines say, why they say it, and what you can change. Use the table as a checklist when you read vendor pages or sit through a demo.
| Capability | What it does | Why you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt sets and personas | Holds buyer questions you can edit, tagged by role and stage | Wrong questions produce a confident report about nothing |
| Multi-engine runs with repeats | Asks each question on several assistants, several times, on a schedule | Shows how each assistant treats you, not just one |
| Answer archive | Stores the full text of every run | Any number can be traced to the words behind it |
| Mention, recommendation and citation split | Counts each outcome on its own line | Each one points to a different fix |
| Cited-source analysis | Lists the pages engines rely on, question by question | Shows where to earn coverage off your site |
| Competitor share | Puts rivals through the same prompts and runs | Tells you who is named in your place |
| AI crawler and referral data | Logs AI bot visits by page and the traffic answers send | Separates "AI cannot read us" from "AI reads us and prefers others" |
| Content creation and checks | Drafts or edits answer-first pages and verifies claims before publishing | Findings that never become pages change nothing |
| Reporting over time | Trends share by engine, persona and topic | Shows whether the changes you made moved the numbers |
| API and MCP export | Sends raw data to your own tools and AI agents | Keeps the data usable beyond the vendor's dashboard |
What kinds of AEO platform are there?
AEO platforms differ mainly in how far they go past measurement. None is better in the abstract; the right kind depends on who will do the work your findings create.
Tracking only
These are monitoring dashboards, usually with alerts and exports.
- What you get: where AI names you, who it names instead, and which pages it trusts.
- What your team still does: decides what to fix, writes pages, pursues third-party coverage, and checks what worked.
- Good fit when: you already have writers and an SEO or content lead with time to act, or you mainly need a benchmark for leadership. For many teams this is enough.
Tracking plus optimization of existing pages
These add page-level advice on top of tracking: missing answers, weak structure, unreadable content.
- What you get: a prioritized to-do list tied to specific URLs, sometimes with suggested rewrites.
- What your team still does: approves and publishes changes, writes any new pages, and handles off-site work.
- Good fit when: you have a large library of pages that are close to being cited and limited capacity to write new ones.
Tracking plus new content plus a team that can run it
These add a content engine that researches, writes and checks new answer-first pages, plus the vendor's team to operate the platform if you want.
- What you get: measurement, new pages and, on some plans, off-site work, delivered as one program.
- What your team still does: supplies facts and access, reviews the work, and owns the decisions.
- Good fit when: the gap is missing pages and third-party presence, and your team lacks the hours. The trade-off is reliance on the vendor's quality controls, so ask how claims are checked.

How is an AEO platform different from an SEO tool or an AEO agency?
The main differences are who does the work and whether you measure search rankings or AI answers; the table sets them side by side.
| Who does the work | What it measures | What it changes | Good fit when | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AEO platform | Your team, or the vendor's team on some plans | Mentions, recommendations and citations in AI answers, and their sources | AI answers, through new and fixed pages and off-site coverage | You want auditable AI answer data and a way to act on it |
| SEO tool | Your team | Rankings, keywords, backlinks, site health, clicks | Search positions, through site and content fixes | Organic search is the main channel or the site has technical problems |
| AEO agency | The agency's staff | Whatever its own method or chosen software reports | AI answers, through the work it delivers | You want to buy the work outright and have no one to run software |
SEO still underpins Google's AI features. Google's Search Central documentation says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO best practices. Google also counts traffic from those features inside overall Search Console web search totals rather than in a separate report.
Many SEO suites now add some AI answer tracking, which can be enough for a first look, and an agency may run its work on an AEO platform behind the scenes. A platform whose own team can run it sits between them (see the last kind above).
Who needs an AEO platform, and when don't you?
You need one when buyers ask AI assistants for advice before they buy from you, and when someone can act on what the data shows.
- Business software and other considered purchases: buyers ask assistants for shortlists and alternatives before talking to sales. Lilach Bullock's study of 275 live US software buying searches, collected on 13 October 2026, found 95.6% showed a Google AI Overview.
- Categories shaped by third-party lists: your own site is only part of the picture. Bullock found roundup and listicle articles made up 46.4% of pages cited by Google AI Overviews on software buying searches, against 20.1% for software companies' own pages and 5.6% for review platforms.
- Teams with content that is not named: you publish and rank on Google, yet AI leaves you out; a platform shows which questions and sources explain the gap.
- Teams reporting to leadership: you need numbers that hold up when someone asks how they were counted.
You probably don't need one yet if:
- No one can act on findings: there is no writer, content budget or vendor team to turn what you learn into pages and coverage.
- Your buyers don't use AI for this purchase: ask recent customers how they researched you before paying to watch a channel they ignore.
- Basic SEO is broken: Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Fix indexing first.
- A manual check answers your question: to see whether ChatGPT names you for a handful of questions, ask them yourself in fresh chats, several times each.
If you are unsure, a time-boxed trial on a small prompt set costs less than a long contract; our guide to running an AEO pilot shows how to test before committing.
What results should you expect, and when?
Expect leading signs before answers change, and measurable movement over months. At OnlyAEO, first measurable results usually take at least 60 days.
No platform or team can guarantee what an AI assistant will say, because the engines decide. OnlyAEO, for one, does not offer a results guarantee and does not promise specific rankings or citations. Treat any vendor that does with suspicion.
Watch the signals in roughly this order:
- AI crawler visits to new and updated pages, the earliest sign engines can read them.
- Citations of new pages in answers where the engine chose to search.
- Mentions of your brand on your target prompts.
- Recommendations, usually the slowest to move.
Read each signal as a share across runs, as in step 9. Our step-by-step guide to measuring AI visibility covers setting up that routine.
Ahrefs' December 2025 study of tens of thousands of brands found branded web mentions correlate highly with brand visibility in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, at about 0.66 to 0.71. That is correlation, not proof of cause, but it is why earned mentions belong next to on-site content in a serious plan.
How does OnlyAEO fit?
OnlyAEO is the AEO platform that tracks where ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name your brand and creates the content to change it. Our team can also run it for you. It belongs to the last kind described above.
On a schedule, it puts your buyers' questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Grok and saves the full text of every answer. OnlyAEO works across all major LLMs and AI assistants, including Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI (Muse), Instinct and more. The content engine writes answer-first articles, verifies each claim against a source, and publishes nothing until it has passed 5 checks.
LLM Attribution covers 170+ AI crawlers, showing which ones fetch your pages and how many visits arrive from AI answers. OnlyAEO is SOC 2 Type II compliant. If you choose a managed plan, our team operates the platform each month and nothing is published without your sign-off. Outreach that earns listings and mentions on sites AI draws from comes only with the Authority plan.
One limit: assistants outside those tracked engines, such as Perplexity, Meta AI (Muse) and Instinct, are covered through content and crawler data, not tracked answer by answer. You can see what the platform includes. For a side-by-side view, read how it compares with other tools.
More questions about AEO platforms
Do I need llms.txt or special schema for an AEO platform to work?
No. A platform reads what the engines say, so it needs nothing installed to measure answers, and for Google's AI features specifically, Google says site owners do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, special markup or special schema.org structured data.
Do AI assistants prefer citing newer pages?
Somewhat. Ahrefs' July 2025 analysis of about 17 million citations found URLs cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini averaged 1,064 days since publication, against 1,432 days for URLs in Google's organic results.
Do Google AI Mode and AI Overviews cite the same sites?
Only partly. Lilach Bullock's October 2026 study found only 56.3% of websites cited by AI Mode were also cited by the AI Overview for the same search, so a platform should report each surface separately.
What should I check about how an AEO platform handles my data?
Ask to read the vendor's independent security audit report rather than trusting a badge, and ask who on your side can see and approve what. OnlyAEO, for example, uses Google sign-in invites and 4 roles (operator, client admin, reviewer, viewer), and scopes every request to its own workspace.
Does an AEO platform work in languages other than English?
It depends on the vendor, so ask which languages it tracks and which it can write in. OnlyAEO, for example, writes articles in almost any language, such as French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Arabic and Indonesian, with the same research and checks as English.
